The News is AwfulFrom ABC News (Australia), the news is awful. Therapists tell clients all the time to stop watching the news, because it's awful, and not good for your stress levels. Mark Humphries is working hard to find something in the news that isn't awful, but wherever he turns, the news is awful. To be honest, there was something in this newscast about Minions: The Rise of Gru, but they can't decide whether that's good or just awful like everything else. Sometimes you just have to laugh about how awful everything is. But then you need to stop and think about the nature of news. To be news, something out of the ordinary has to happen. Good things happen all the time, but they don't make the news because they aren't unusual enough. Good things are ordinary, which in itself is a good thing. Maybe therapists have it right. If the news is awful, turn it off and look around you for the good things going on in the world. I would suggest a trip to Supa Fluffy.-via Digg #news #newscast #awful #MarkHumphries
Local News Reports That Gas Prices Are RisingGas prices are what people are talking about, so local news stations report on it. But it doesn't matter where you live, those stories are all going to be the same. They teach this formula in broadcast school. But if you are of a certain age, you might have a sense of deja vu. These stories have been the same since the 1970s at least, and will continue to pop up every few years for the foreseeable future. Hey, gas was just as expensive in 2006 when I had a long-distance relationship. It was just as expensive in 2013 when I took the family on a continental road trip. It's probably been this high at other times that I have no reason to remember it. Still, the news media can fill a few minutes just by acting as if it's news. -via reddit#news #localnews #gas
The Best News Bloopers of 2021Broadcast journalism is hard. You think you're going to tell people important news but it can fall apart easily, and often live on the air. It's not easy to say "administering Fooser's boozer boster dose," especially when that's not at all what the teleprompter says. And when you screw up, you know that it's been recorded to video. The funnier it is, the more likely it will go viral, and it will certainly make the end-of-the-year compilation reel. So in the midst of serious news that might bring you down, let's look back on the year in local news (and even network news) and the many failures that were recorded for posterity. There's a half-hour of them here, but you don't have to watch them all in the same sitting. This may contain NSFW language.
