While we've seen some truly impressive snow sculptures, the basic snowman remains pretty standard: three stacked balls of snow, sticks for arms, and a carrot for the nose. Eyes can be coal, rocks, or buttons. Every kid who lives in snow country learns how to build one with the materials at hand. But who came up with this idea? Did it evolve over time, or did one guy just invent it? And why?
