Wife Doesn’t Want Her Husband’s Last Name To Be Used By Their Kids

It’s that bad. Ouch.

Regarding last names, married couples are usually required to adopt the man’s surname. After they get to have children, their kids will have to adopt the father’s last name. In today’s time, that tradition is now something that really isn’t fully followed by young couples. One wife is actually fine following it, but the last name they have to adopt is a bit problematic. She explains in a post on Reddit that she has a very big problem with her husband’s last name that she can’t give to their kids.

"My husband's last name is Butt. Can someone please help me illuminate to him why this last name is less than ideal?” she wrote on the platform. “I totally get we can't shield kids from everything and I understand the whole family ties thing but c'mon. Am I being unreasonable by suggesting our future kid either take my name, a hybrid, or a new one altogether?"

She isn’t lying about Butt being a real surname. According to Ancestry.com, it comes from the Old English "butta," or "something or someone short and stumpy." We understand her distress, as today it implies a different meaning altogether. Until the year 1200, people used it as their first name. There are no updates to the lady’s post, but Reddit users have been commenting their support for her plight. "My husband's boss has a horrendous last name, worse than Butt, but he was self-aware enough to suggest his kids take his wife's name,” one wrote. “So that's what they did and everyone's happy, except for the boss's parents."
