For the past couple of years, we have all grown familiar with the concept of urban isolation brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic. This article talks about a different kind of urban isolation—one that displays a serene, perhaps almost eerie, aesthetic akin to that of the 2002 zombie apocalyptic movie 28 Days Later.
In 2014, indoor skatepark and skateboard media The Berrics and cinematography camera manufacturer RED Digital Cinema teamed up to create REDirect, a contest for skateboard filmmakers. The winning video was Urban Isolation by Russell Houghten.
The film is 3 minutes and 41 seconds long. It features skateboarders riding around empty highways and streets in Los Angeles. The isolated effect was achieved by editing out all the vehicles. The background music helped give the film its desired apocalyptic feel.
