This Painting Did Not Win the US Federal Duck Stamp Contest

The United States Postal Service holds an annual contest which invites artists to submit designs for stamps illustrating America’s waterfowl. Travis Chapman is a master of the brush, as you can see with his paintings of Obi-Wan Kenobi toasting marshmallows over the burning body of Anakin Skywalker and Bert and Ernie hunting Snuffleupagus. This man is a genius.

Nonetheless, the winner was some guy who painted some goose.

We, the American people, could have had a stamp with a jet shark hunting mallards. In addition to accurately describing the avians of the Southeastern United States, it would have looked really cool.

The contest rules are fairly strict. But at no point does the USPS say, “no sharks.” So Chapman—and the American people—were robbed of the stamp that we deserve.
