āScotland started it. They have been giving their government snowplows (called gritters) odd and unusual names, often bestowed by schoolchildren. It's a lovely idea that can connect citizens with their government services, and they spread smiles around on wintery days when you really need one. The idea caught fire in the US and Canada a few years ago, and many states and municipalities now challenge the public to name the machines. The funniest puns will always win. Minnesota just recently announced the winning names of this year's naming contest.
āCalgary's got some newly-named snowplows this year, too.
Here are the winner's of Ohio's latest competition.
But that's not all! Check out the latest puns used for snow plows in Vermont, North Dakota, Colorado, and Michigan. Michigan has 299 plows! Don't forget, you can keep up with the names and activities of Scotland's plows with the Gritter Tracker. Happy plowing!
