Streaming Platforms Takes A Shot At Netflix For Password Sharing Crackdown

Get your popcorn, dear. The corporations are fighting.

Netflix, who infamously started by allowing users to share passwords with each other, is now cracking down on said feature on their streaming platform. Before it became such a household name, it actually turned a blind eye to the practice of account owners sharing their login credentials with other people regardless of whether they lived in the same household.

Now, the streaming giant is asking for users extra charge every time they add a profile for a different member living outside their household. It doesn’t care if it’s actually one of your family members living in another area. "Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with - your household," they said in an official email sent to US subscribers.

If users wish to add a different member, they would have to pay a whopping extra $7.99 a month. Yikes. Let’s just say that the Internet did not take this announcement well. Some even started making jokes, including a rival streaming platform. The official Twitter account for Amazon Prime UK shared a tweet posted by Netflix from 2017, which reads: “Love is sharing a password.” Ironic, really. They then proceeded to add a screenshot of Prime’s selection page, with all six profiles named “Everyone Who Has Our Password ❤️.”
