This young woman is totally creeped out, and I can understand why. Finding a list of people's names, home addresses, and phone numbers spells out privacy violations and maybe even identity theft. This is the kind of list social media platforms sell to middlemen who resell it to advertisers, telemarketers, and scam artists. Why would her grandfather have something like that around the house? Is he involved in something nefarious?
To someone of an earlier generation, the phone book is a convenience from a time when people used their phones for phone calls only, few people even had credit cards, and you had to produce a signature for any money to come out of your bank account. What the TikTok generation woman in this Onion video doesn't see just yet is that none of her friends are listed in this mysterious book, because it's only for land lines.
