In 1996, Dawn and Paul connected online for a couple of months. She lived in Atlanta while Paul was from London and they had been email pen pals. At the time, they were both married but were both in unhappy relationships.
Their friendships soon grew more intense. With that realization, they both decided to end their respective marriages before actually meeting each other.
The long distance couple chose to meet in New York City. By then, Paul had seen the romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle where in the climactic scene, lead couple Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan got together at the top of the Empire State Building. As a hopeless romantic himself, Paul chose the same place to meet with Dawn. And from then on, they were inseparable.
