Does calling a penguin a "flightless bird" make them any lesser than other birds? Labels are important. Modifiers are important. The ego of an entire group may be at stake when we categorize them with terms that set them apart from the larger group. Yes, you may argue that most birds fly, so penguins are an outlier and cannot expected to be treated as the default. But flight is important to these two.
