Drivers in Chicago received free gas thanks to a millionaire and ex-mayoral candidate, Willie Wilson, who donated $200,000 worth of petrol to gasoline stations.
"The soaring price of gas has caused a hardship for too many of our citizens. The average price of regular gas has gone well over $4 a gallon for the first time in nearly 14 years and is now up nearly 50% from last year. The war in Ukraine, a ban on Russian oil, and high taxes are contributing to rising fuel prices,” Dr. Wilson said.
Vehicles lined up at 10 participating gasoline stations since 2 a.m. to get up to $50 worth of gas for free. The stations opened at 7 a.m. – gas is pumped and counted by individuals hired by Wilson.
Some of the participating petrol pump owners even lowered their gasoline prices during the giveaway to extend the donation to as many drivers as possible.
