Beware of Lions in the Wilderness

If you are out hiking in the woods and someone says they saw a lion, you might be surprised because there are no lions in the United States. Or at least none in the wild. So you just might want to look in case one escaped from a zoo.

Oh, but this is just a cougar. Or a puma, or a catamount, panther, or mountain lion. His buddy just left off the "mountain" part, and therefore he must be subjected to a lecture on English usage. This is a prime example of rearranging the deck chairs as the ship sinks under the ocean's surface. Would you rather be right or be able to escape with both legs? Surely the semantics argument could wait until they were both elsewhere. But then again, a human cannot outrun a cougar that is determined to catch them. The most each guy could hope for is to outrun the other and become the sole survivor. In that case the argument would be moot, and that's not very satisfying, is it?
